The right food for the colon
According to the German Cancer Research Center, colorectal cancer is currently the second most common tumor in women and the third most common in men in Germany. Proper nutrition offers an important option for the prevention of cancer. A nutritionist explains what type of nutrition is particularly healthy for the intestine.

Kate Zeratsky is a nutritionist at the renowned Mayo Clinic in the United States. Since colorectal cancer is also widespread in the USA, the expert explains which diet contributes to protection.
Dietary fiber keeps the gut healthy
The large intestine is the last part of the digestive tract. The food we eat is an important factor in the health of this organ. In order to keep the intestine healthy, Zeratsky recommends a nutrient-rich diet with lots of fiber.
Strong intestinal walls thanks to fiber
"A nutrient-rich, high-fiber diet not only keeps the walls of your colon strong, it can also prevent hemorrhoids or bags in the colon," explains Zeratsky. This diet also helps to prevent intestinal polyps and cancer.
Western nutrition is often the opposite of this
The nutrition expert points out that a typical Western diet is characterized by a low nutrient density with large portions of processed meat and refined cereals. "Our diet tends to be less nutritional," Zeratsky emphasizes.
These foods should be consumed more
According to Zeratsky, fiber-rich foods such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds are richer in nutrients. In addition, the fiber also controls the amount and type of bacteria in the large intestine, according to the scientist.
Lose weight and prevent diabetes at the same time
"The nutrients in these foods can also help prevent digestive and other chronic diseases like diabetes and help you control your weight," Zeratsky reports. If you want to increase the fiber in your diet, you should do this gradually and drink plenty of water so that the body can adjust to it.
The following list shows some foods that are particularly high in fiber and nutrients:
- Fruits like apples, pears, berries, kiwis, citrus fruits.
- Dried fruits such as plums, raisins and apricots (avoid adding sugar).
- Vegetables such as broccoli, peas, carrots, potatoes, Brussels sprouts, white cabbages.
- Whole grain products such as whole grain bread, whole grain pasta.
- Nuts and seeds.
