Testosterone in the blood: Then men should have a hormone check carried out
In old age, the body's production of the important hormone testosterone decreases. The body mass increases, skin and hair change and the loss of performance increases. But men can take action themselves and take countermeasures. There are also means, but that's not the end of it.
These are the first signs of testosterone deficiency:
- Less muscle mass and strength
- Change in body image (smooth skin)
- Less body hair
- Skin and hair changes
- Reduction in bone mass
- Sexual disorders (potency problems, less desire)
- Loss of performance and listlessness
- Frequent fatigue and tiredness
“Testosterone is the main male sex hormone. With age it sinks in men, ”explain the Federal Medical Association (BÄK) and the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KBV) on their common portal“ patienten-information.de ”. But there is something you can do about testosterone deficiency.
Checking hormone levels can be worthwhile
Lethargy, less sexual desire, erectile dysfunction, noticeably smooth skin - and finally diminishing muscle mass and increasing weight: If men notice such symptoms in themselves, a check of the hormone level may be worthwhile.
Because under certain circumstances, it may be that they have too little testosterone in the blood, explains urologist Christian Leiber in the magazine "Neue Apotheken Illustrierte" (issue January 1, 2020).
The shortage is not uncommon: According to the expert, ten to 15 percent of men have complaints that are caused by it. A replacement therapy can help, either in the form of a daily gel or with a syringe administered every few weeks.
Lifestyle needs to be changed
Therapy is of little use, however, if the person affected does not change their lifestyle at the same time.
In concrete terms, this means losing weight and moving more. Because overweight, problems with blood pressure and lack of exercise are risk factors for testosterone deficiency. Weight training can increase testosterone levels.
And vice versa, the risk of the disease can be significantly reduced through a healthy diet and adequate exercise. (ad; source: dpa / tmn)
