Long-term consumption of cranberry juice works against high blood pressure
According to the German Hypertension League, every third to fourth person in Germany suffers high blood pressure (Hypertension). Often the problem can be controlled by eating healthier. A new study has now shown that long-term consumption of cranberry juice lowers high blood pressure and improves the function of the blood vessels.
In Germany alone, around 20 to 30 million people suffer from high blood pressure. Untreated hypertension is the number one risk factor for cardiovascular diseases and is therefore responsible for many deaths from heart attacks or strokes. In addition to drug therapies, nutrition plays a key role in treating high blood pressure.
High blood pressure was significantly reduced
As the University of Helsinki (Finland) wrote in a statement, epidemiological studies have shown that polyphenol-rich foods reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Cranberries, blueberries, cranberries and black currants are excellent sources of polyphenols.
In her doctoral thesis, Anne Kivimäki investigated the cardiovascular effects of cold-pressed cranberry juice, cranberry juice and black currant juice. These were administered as drinking fluids to genetically hypertensive rats for eight to ten weeks.
Diluted cranberry juice was shown to significantly lower high blood pressure, while juice containing more polyphenols improved the function of impaired blood vessels to the level of healthy vessels.
However, the juice did not prevent the age-related increase in blood pressure that is typical of the hypertensive animal strain.
No substitute for medication
"These experimental results have to be confirmed by comparative clinical studies in healthy people with slightly elevated blood pressure who are receiving nutritional and lifestyle advice instead of drug therapy at this time," says Kivimäk.
"Cranberry juice is not a substitute for medication, but a good nutritional supplement," says the researcher.

Positive effects of polyphenol-rich foods
Earlier studies had shown that the consumption of foods rich in polyphenols such as berries, fruits, tea and cocoa can have a positive effect on cardiovascular health.
Researchers from Great Britain recently reported in the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition" that eating two apples a day can reduce the risk of heart diseases such as heart attacks. The positive effect was attributed to the fiber-rich fiber contained in the fruit as well as to the polyphenols.
And a study by US scientists provided evidence that polyphenols in sour cherries could help lower high blood pressure and cholesterol.
