Manufacturer recalls protein bars because of diarrhea

The British company SENS Foods Ltd. has started a recall for the protein bar "Sens Pleasure Protein, dark chocolate & sour cherry & cricket flour". According to the manufacturer, the product may be contaminated with bacteria that can cause diarrhea.

SENS Foods Ltd. / SENS Foods GmbH calls back the protein bar "Sens Pleasure Protein, Dark Chocolate & Sour Cherry & Grilled Meal" with the best-before date (MHD): May 31, 2020 and the lot number: L / 190509ECSC. Reason for the measure: The product could contain toxin-forming bacteria, which can lead to diarrhea.

Company advises against buying

According to consumer information published by the Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety on its portal "lebensmittelwarnung.de", bacteria of the species Bacillus cytotoxicus occurred during production.

"These can cause diarrhea," the company writes. And further: “This group of bacteria is completely natural in nature and, as always, it depends on the concentration. With us this is clearly exceeded ”.

The manufacturer therefore asks "not to buy this one cherry bar from us with the best before date of 2020" and to bring the bar affected by the recall back to the supermarket.

Bacteria can cause gastrointestinal disorders

"Bacillus cereus bacteria in food can cause gastrointestinal diseases," wrote the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) in a statement.

According to the institute, a distinction is made between two types of disease, one that is shown by vomiting (emetic disease) and one that is associated with diarrhea (type of diarrhea).

“These gastrointestinal diseases can affect people of all ages, they are not contagious and rarely last longer than 24 hours. Serious illnesses are very rare, ”said the BfR. (ad)
