Manufacturer recalls rye flour because of increased amount of ergot alkaloids
Kunstmühle Reisgang GmbH from Hettenshausen in Upper Bavaria has started a recall for a batch of rye flour. According to company information, an increased amount of ergot alkaloids was found in the flour. Consumption can lead to health problems such as high blood pressure or hallucinations.
Increased amount of ergot alkaloids found
Kunstmühle Reisgang GmbH from Hettenshausen (Bavaria) is recalling a batch of flour magic rye flour type 1150 with the date of minimum durability 17.07.20. According to the information, an increased amount of ergot alkaloids was found in the flour. "Alkaloids are mainly found in ergot, which grows on cereal ears and grasses," the company explains on its website. "Consumption can lead to nausea, headache, high blood pressure or, in rare cases, hallucinations," it continues.
Flour was only sold in Bavaria
According to the manufacturer, only the "Rye flour type 1150" sold in the Free State of Bavaria with the above-mentioned best before date is affected by the recall.
Customers who have purchased the rye flour should return it to the point of sale.
There you will be reimbursed the purchase price without presenting a receipt.
Serious health problems possible
According to the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR), eating even small amounts of ergot alkaloid can lead to symptoms such as nausea, abdominal pain, muscle contractions, headache, cardiovascular problems such as high blood pressure and disorders of the central nervous system (CNS).
"After consuming large amounts of ergot alkaloid, circulatory disorders due to the vasoconstrictive effects on the blood vessels, in particular of the heart muscle, but also of the kidneys and limbs, are described as acute toxic effects," the institute writes on its website.
According to the experts, the symptoms can be accompanied by hallucinations, convulsions, sensory disorders and paralysis and can lead to death after respiratory or cardiac arrest.
Children are considered to be particularly at risk from ergot alkaloids in food due to their lower body weight compared to the amount consumed.
In addition, according to the BfR, pregnant women, unborn children and newborns are also considered to be particularly sensitive consumer groups. (ad)
