Increased amount of ergot alkaloids found

Kunstmühle Reisgang GmbH from Hettenshausen (Bavaria) is recalling a batch of flour magic rye flour type 1150 with the date of minimum durability 17.07.20. According to the information, an increased amount of ergot alkaloids was found in the flour. "After consuming large amounts of ergot alkaloid, circulatory disorders due to the vasoconstrictive effects on the blood vessels, in particular of the heart muscle, but also of the kidneys and limbs, are described as acute toxic effects," the institute writes on its website.

According to the experts, the symptoms can be accompanied by hallucinations, convulsions, sensory disorders and paralysis and can lead to death after respiratory or cardiac arrest.

Children are considered to be particularly at risk from ergot alkaloids in food due to their lower body weight compared to the amount consumed.

In addition, according to the BfR, pregnant women, unborn children and newborns are also considered to be particularly sensitive consumer groups. (ad)
