Lose weight: which diet is best?

Every day we hear about new diet successes with certain weight loss methods. As a normal mortal, it is hardly possible to distinguish which diet is the best for you. Therefore, consumer advocates have now taken the reins and examined the most common diet variants. You came to the following results:

Unhealthy overweight

When you consider that being overweight or obese can lead to health problems such as high blood pressure and an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, there are truly enough reasons to shed extra pounds. If you want to lose weight, you will find numerous tips and methods on the net that should help you lose weight. The Hessen Consumer Center has taken a closer look at some of them. See the summary of results in our video.

Miracle cures are said to help you lose weight

"Gaining a few pounds is easy - getting rid of them is not," said Wiebke Franz, nutrition expert at the Hessen Consumer Center in a statement.

"Many diets and slimming products promise quick results, but often cannot keep these promises or are even dangerous," says the expert.

For example, true miracles are promised in advertising for so-called "fat burners": "Lose weight without exercise - eat everything and lose weight!"

If a product is advertised as such, the alarm bells should ring. Because such dietary supplements with dangerous and banned substances often appear on the Internet.

But even harmless substances have so far not been shown to lose a lot of weight with their help. Consumer advocates therefore advise against using “fat burners”, especially products from unsafe sources on the Internet.

Avoid dinner

There is also widespread advice among those wanting to lose weight that they stop eating after 6 p.m.

This is due to the fact that in a night phase without food consumption, the blood sugar level drops, as a result less insulin is released and fats from fat deposits are mobilized.

However, the bottom line is that total caloric intake over 24 hours is crucial. You can only lose weight if you use more energy than you supply.

Intermittent fasting is the trend

Eat eight hours and go hungry for the next 16 hours? Or would you rather fast for two whole days and enjoy the rest of the week without remorse?

The advantage of interval fasting is that it hardly changes in everyday life. Because if you eat as usual on five days and only eat little and low in calories on two, you can still receive invitations or go out to eat.

Comparisons with other diets show that interval fasting helps you lose weight.

"Nevertheless: five days of eating whatever you want and how much you want is only sensible if you make the food selection healthier overall," says Franz.

Less carbohydrates - less fat

When it comes to successful weight loss methods, the low carb diet is often highlighted.

Studies have shown that diets that reduce carbohydrates can help you lose weight. According to consumer advocates, long-term success can be achieved by reducing the consumption of fats.

But be careful: Those who largely or entirely do without carbohydrates will find it difficult to keep up in the long run. The result: the pounds come back quickly with the old eating habits.

In contrast, eating significantly less white bread, pastries, snacks and sweets and more vegetables, whole grain products and protein-rich foods can help you lose weight and maintain your new weight.

Low-fat or low-sugar foods are not automatically low in calories

As the consumer advice center further explains, low-fat or low-sugar foods are not automatically low in calories.

They only have to contain at least 30 percent less sugar or fat than regular foods in the same category.

Manufacturers usually replace the omitted nutrient with other ingredients, which often also provide energy, or with flavors, sweeteners and fillers.

"Did you know that many people who assume that they consume fewer calories have more access to the supposed light product?" Asks Franz.

“You'd better rely on natural light weights like jacket potatoes instead of fries. Then you consume fewer calories even without expensive special products. ”(Ad)
