Life expectancy is the average amount of time that a certain person has until his death. This is based on mortality tables on the basis of which the calculation is made. In Germany, the value of life expectancy for men and women has risen steadily, which is mainly due to the improved medical care in older age.

Until the early 20th century, this was primarily due to the significant reduction in the mortality rate of infants and children. On average, women have about five years longer life expectancy than men, which is often attributed to a higher level of health awareness among women.
