The number of diabetics in Germany is increasing rapidly
In Germany, more and more people are diagnosed with diabetes. The number of people affected rose by six percent to 7.6 million within five years. In addition to demographic change, the reasons for the increase are also unhealthy diet and lack of exercise.
More and more Germans suffer from diabetes
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the number of diabetes patients worldwide has been increasing massively for years. In Germany too, more and more people are diabetic. This also shows the "Diabetes Altas" of the Barmer health insurance on World Diabetes Day on November 14th.
Reasons for the increase in diseases
According to the analysis, a total of 9.2 percent of the population, i.e. 7.6 million citizens, suffered from the so-called diabetes in 2017.
According to the information, this is almost six percent more than in 2013 with 8.7 percent of the population. Over 90 percent of those affected have type 2 diabetes.
"The fact that more and more people are diabetics is not only due to demographic change," explains Prof. Dr. Christoph Straub, CEO of Barmer in a message.
“Unhealthy eating and lack of exercise also play a role. That is why it is time for the National Diabetes Strategy enshrined in the coalition agreement to be designed and implemented, ”said the expert.
Diabetes especially in East Germany
According to the "Diabetes Atlas", the highest diabetes rates were in Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt last year with 11.5 percent each, Brandenburg (11.3 percent), Thuringia (11.1 percent) and Mecklenburg-West Pomerania (eleven percent) .
The lowest rates were in Schleswig-Holstein (eight percent) and Hamburg (8.2 percent).
"The regional fluctuations in diabetes rates are not due to different age or gender structures," says Straub.
In the past five years, however, one can observe a positive development in Saxony and Thuringia. There, the rate had dropped by 0.2 percent each, while elsewhere the affected rates had risen moderately.
Pay attention to the right nutrition
To prevent diabetes, you should avoid being overweight or obese and exercise regularly. However, nutrition is very important for prevention.
Among other things, it is recommended to eat a lot of fresh fruits, vegetables and legumes, rather to rely on foods high in fiber and to prefer low-fat foods.
In addition, the diet should contain a high percentage of whole grains.
It is better to stay away from high-calorie snacks such as chocolate. This also applies to high-calorie drinks. Instead of lemonade or beer it is better to use water or unsweetened teas.
Green tea is particularly recommended here, as a study showed.
According to experts, fruit juices should at best be consumed as spritzers. (ad)
