US researchers recently published a study that concluded that lack of exercise and the resulting lack of fitness are more dangerous than smoking, diabetes, and heart disease. As the Australian-New Zealand University Association / Ranke-Heinemann Institute reports, researchers at the University of Queensland School of Human Movement and Nutrition Sciences in Brisbane have found that tea or coffee can help get things going.

The researchers found in their study that women who drink a cup or two of tea or coffee a day are more likely to do the recommended level of moderate to intense exercise than those who consume these drinks less frequently.

The results of the study were published in the "International Journal of Environmental Reasearch and Public Health".

Caffeine reduces fatigue and lack of energy

Like Dr. Tina Skinner of the University of Queensland said that caffeine consumption through coffee and tea can encourage middle-aged women to do sports because it reduces fatigue and lack of energy.

“Exercise is important to get old healthy. Fatigue and lack of energy often prevent middle-aged to old women from doing the necessary work, ”says Dr. Skinner in a message.

"The consumption of the alkaloid caffeine, which is found naturally and abundantly in coffee and tea, has already been associated with various health benefits, such as a reduced feeling of exertion when exercising and a self-selected increased intensity of sporting exercises," said Dr. Skinner.

"Caffeine has also been linked to reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes, dementia and some cancers."

One or two cups a day

The study examined the habits of 7,580 women who were born between 1946 and 1951 and participate in a long-term Australian study on women's health.

The participants were asked not only to document their average tea and coffee consumption over the past twelve months, but also to record their exercise and sporting behavior from the previous week.

"Coffee and tea drinkers feel less tired and have more energy," explained the study author.

“Those who drink a cup or two of coffee a day are 17 percent more likely to get the recommended level of exercise. Those who drink one to two cups of tea a day were between 13 and 26 percent, ”said Dr. Skinner.

“Exercise is important in every stage of life. Especially for middle-aged people, it ensures physical functionality and independence and helps to keep the risk of old age as low as possible, ”says the expert. (ad)
